Telegram sticker size requirements
A Telegram sticker is 512 × 512 pixels. The rule is slightly more forgiving than that number suggests: one side must be exactly 512 px and the other side must be 512 px or less. So 512 × 512 and 512 × 384 are both valid, while 500 × 500 is not — Telegram rejects it because neither side hits 512. Static stickers must be PNG or WEBP files of 512 KB or less, and a transparent background is strongly recommended so the sticker sits cleanly on any chat wallpaper, in light and dark themes alike.
Animated and video stickers use different containers with tighter budgets. An animated sticker is a TGS file — a gzip-compressed Lottie vector animation — that must be exactly 512 × 512, run at 60 fps, last no longer than 3 seconds, and weigh 64 KB or less. A video sticker is a WEBM file encoded with VP9: one side 512 px (the other 512 px or less), 30 fps, up to 3 seconds, 256 KB maximum, and no audio track. Custom emoji are the outlier at 100 × 100 px, and they follow the static, animated, or video rules for everything else.

How to resize an image for a Telegram sticker

Telegram sticker size — frequently asked questions
What size is a Telegram sticker?
512 × 512 pixels. Telegram's exact requirement for static stickers is that one side must be exactly 512 px and the other side must be 512 px or smaller, so 512 × 512, 512 × 400, and 300 × 512 are all accepted. The file must be a PNG or WEBP of 512 KB or less. Animated stickers are TGS files at exactly 512 × 512 and 64 KB or less, video stickers are WEBM files with one side at 512 px and 256 KB or less, and custom emoji are 100 × 100 px.
Why does Telegram reject my sticker?
Almost always one of five reasons: neither side is exactly 512 px (a 500 × 500 image fails); the file is larger than 512 KB; it is a JPG or another unsupported format instead of PNG or WEBP; you sent it as a compressed photo instead of a file, which strips the alpha channel and re-encodes it as JPEG; or, for animated packs, the TGS is over 64 KB or longer than 3 seconds. Always attach stickers as a file, never as a photo.
PNG or WebP — which should I use?
Telegram accepts both. PNG is lossless, so flat illustrations, logos, and text stay perfectly crisp — but a detailed 512 × 512 PNG can exceed the 512 KB limit. WebP compresses the same image to roughly a fifth of the size and still supports transparency, which is why Telegram itself stores stickers as WEBP internally. Start with PNG; if your export goes over 512 KB, switch to WebP and lower the quality slider until it fits.
How do I keep the transparent background?
Export from your editor as PNG or WebP with the alpha channel intact, resize it here (transparency is preserved, and contain mode adds transparent padding rather than white), and send the result to Telegram as a file rather than as a photo. Sending as a photo re-encodes the image to JPEG and replaces transparency with a solid background. If your source is a JPG, there is no alpha to keep — you need to cut the subject out in an image editor first.
What about animated sticker size?
Animated stickers are far more constrained than static ones: a TGS file must be exactly 512 × 512, run at 60 fps, last 3 seconds or less, and stay under 64 KB. That 64 KB budget is why TGS is a gzip-compressed Lottie vector file rather than a video — vector shapes and keyframes compress to a fraction of what pixels would. Bitmap images cannot be turned into a valid TGS; you need a Lottie animation as the source.

The pack thumbnail — the small icon shown in the sticker tray — is 100 × 100 px, uploaded as a PNG or WEBP of up to 128 KB (an animated TGS or WEBM thumbnail may be used instead, up to 32 KB). If you never set one, Telegram simply uses the first sticker in the pack, scaled down. Custom emoji are a separate product and are always 100 × 100 px, which is why a sticker resized to 512 px cannot be reused as an emoji without exporting a smaller copy.
