WhatsApp sticker format explained
WhatsApp stickers are WebP images with a fixed geometry: exactly 512 × 512 pixels, with no tolerance for 511 or 513. A static sticker file has to stay under 100 KB, and an animated one under 500 KB. Every sticker pack also carries a tray icon — a 96 × 96 PNG under 50 KB — which is the thumbnail shown in WhatsApp's sticker drawer. WhatsApp additionally recommends leaving an 8–16 px transparent margin around the artwork so nothing is clipped by the sticker frame or hidden behind interface elements.
Those limits exist because stickers are re-sent constantly over mobile connections, so WhatsApp keeps each file tiny and every canvas identical. This converter handles both parts for you: it draws your image into a 512 × 512 canvas with a contain fit — the whole picture is preserved and the leftover space becomes transparent padding — then encodes WebP starting at quality 0.92 and steps the quality down until the file lands under 100 KB. How to convert an image into a WhatsApp sticker

What format are WhatsApp stickers?
WhatsApp stickers are WebP images that must be exactly 512 × 512 pixels. Static stickers have to stay under 100 KB and animated stickers under 500 KB. Each pack also needs a 96 × 96 PNG tray icon under 50 KB, and WhatsApp recommends an 8–16 px transparent margin around the artwork so it is not clipped.
How do I actually add the sticker to WhatsApp?
A .webp file on its own is not an installable pack, so be prepared for one extra step. On a phone, download the sticker, open a sticker maker app that supports WhatsApp's sticker pack API, import the WebP (and the tray icon), then tap Add to WhatsApp. On WhatsApp Web or Desktop, open the emoji and sticker panel and use the built-in sticker tool to upload the image. Sending the .webp as a photo or document only delivers it as an ordinary image, not as a sticker.
Why 100 KB, and what if my image is bigger?
100 KB is WhatsApp's hard ceiling for static stickers — sticker maker apps reject anything larger. The converter handles it automatically by re-encoding the WebP at progressively lower quality (0.92, 0.85, 0.78, and so on) and stopping at the first version that fits. Detailed photographs are the hardest to compress, so if the quality drops further than you like, crop tighter, remove a busy background, or start from flat-colour artwork — those land under the limit at a much higher quality setting.
Can I make animated WhatsApp stickers here?
No — this tool is static-only, and that is a browser limitation rather than a choice. The canvas API can encode a single WebP frame but cannot write animated WebP, which is what WhatsApp's animated stickers (up to 500 KB) are made of. Do I lose transparency?
No. WebP has a full alpha channel, so transparent pixels in a PNG or WebP source come through untouched and the sticker keeps its cut-out shape. The padding added around the artwork is transparent too. JPG sources have no transparency of their own, so the photo stays a rectangle with transparent padding around it. Turning on the 16 px safe margin keeps the artwork away from the edge, matching WhatsApp's 8–16 px recommendation.
What is the difference between Telegram and WhatsApp stickers?
Both platforms build on a 512 px canvas, but the file formats differ. WhatsApp accepts only WebP, exactly 512 × 512, under 100 KB. Telegram accepts PNG or WebP static stickers up to 512 KB where one side must be exactly 512 px, plus .tgs (Lottie) animated stickers under 64 KB and .webm video stickers.
