GIF to Telegram Sticker Converter

Turn any GIF into a Telegram video sticker — a 512 px WEBM clip encoded with VP9, under 3 seconds and under 256 KB.

Drop a .gif, check the trimmed preview, then encode and download a file the @Stickers bot will accept. Everything runs in your browser.

Telegram video stickers, explained

Telegram sticker packs come in three flavours: static stickers (WEBP images), animated stickers (TGS, a gzipped Lottie vector animation), and video stickers (WEBM). Video stickers arrived in 2021 and are the route for anything frame-based — a reaction GIF, a screen recording, a rendered loop. Sending a GIF into a chat is a different feature entirely: Telegram re-encodes it to a muted MP4 for the message list, and that file never becomes a sticker. The @Stickers bot only accepts a WEBM video file.

The video sticker rules are strict. The file must be a WEBM container with VP9 video, exactly 512 px on its longest side (the other side 512 px or smaller), at most 3 seconds long, at most 30 frames per second, with no audio track, and no larger than 256 KB. It should also loop cleanly, because Telegram replays stickers on repeat. A GIF satisfies none of that by default — it is a palette-based image format with a 256-colour table, arbitrary dimensions, per-frame delays instead of a fixed frame rate, and no video codec at all. Renaming the file does nothing; the frames have to be decoded, resized, and re-encoded, which is what this converter does locally in your browser.

How to convert a GIF into a Telegram sticker

  1. 01

    Get or pick a GIF

Any .gif works: a reaction GIF you saved, an export from After Effects or a screen recorder, or an animation you made yourself. Short, tightly cropped loops with flat colour make the best stickers.

  2. 02

    Decode and check the trim

Drop the file in. Every frame is decoded on the spot and you get the source dimensions, frame count, and native duration, plus a live preview of the first 3 seconds on the 512 px sticker canvas.

  3. 03

    Encode the WebM

Press convert. The frames play back in real time on the 512 px canvas while the browser encodes VP9 video at 30 fps with no audio track — so the encode takes about as long as the clip itself.

  4. 04

    Upload it through @Stickers

Download the .webm, open @Stickers in Telegram and send /newvideopack. Give the pack a name, send the file as a document so it is not re-compressed, reply with an emoji for the sticker, then send /publish.

Decodes GIFs frame by frame

The decoder reads the colour palette, per-frame delays, patch offsets, and disposal methods, so partial frames composite exactly the way they do in a browser.

Sizes to the 512 px rule

The longest side is set to exactly 512 px and the shorter side scales with it — the first thing Telegram checks when you upload a video sticker.

Enforces the 3-second limit

Longer GIFs are trimmed to the first 3 seconds and the tool tells you exactly how much was left out, so nothing disappears silently.

Checks the file before you upload

After encoding you get a pass or fail readout for dimensions, duration, codec, and the 256 KB budget — the four reasons the @Stickers bot rejects files.

GIF to Telegram sticker — frequently asked questions

Can I use a GIF directly as a Telegram sticker?

No. Telegram stickers exist in three formats — static WEBP, animated TGS, and video WEBM — and GIF is not one of them. Sending a GIF in a chat is a separate feature: Telegram converts it into a muted MP4 for playback in the message list, and it never joins a sticker pack. To get a GIF into a pack you have to re-encode it as a WEBM video sticker, which is what this tool does.

How do I add the WEBM file to Telegram?

Open a chat with @Stickers and send /newvideopack. The bot asks for a pack name, then for the sticker file — send the .webm as a document, not as a video, so Telegram does not re-compress it. Reply with the emoji that should represent the sticker, repeat for every sticker you want, then send /publish. The bot returns a t.me/addstickers link you can share.

Why is my file over 256 KB, and how do I fix it?

VP9 spends bits on detail and motion: film grain, gradients, busy backgrounds, and hard cuts all cost far more than flat shapes on a plain background. The fixes, in order of impact: shorten the clip (a 1.5-second loop has roughly half the budget problem of a 3-second one), crop tighter so the subject fills the frame, and prefer source GIFs with flat colour and clean edges. The converter already uses the maximum 512 px canvas and picks a bitrate from your clip length, so length and visual complexity are the two levers left to you.

Why does VP9 matter, and what if my browser only produced VP8?

Telegram's video sticker specification names VP9 explicitly, and files encoded with VP8 are commonly rejected by the @Stickers bot. In-browser encoding depends on what the MediaRecorder API exposes: Chrome and Edge support 'video/webm;codecs=vp9', while Safari's WebM recording support is limited and some Firefox builds fall back to VP8. If the tool warns that it produced VP8, redo the conversion in Chrome or Edge rather than uploading the fallback file.

Does audio matter?

Video stickers must contain no audio track, and this converter cannot add one — it records the canvas only, so the output has a single video track by construction. If your GIF started life as a video with sound, that sound is already gone: the GIF format has never carried audio.

What about animated TGS stickers instead?

TGS is Telegram's vector sticker format: a gzip-compressed Lottie animation capped at 64 KB that stays razor-sharp at any size, which makes it the better choice for illustrated or motion-designed stickers. It cannot be made from a GIF, because vector shapes cannot be recovered from pixels. If you already have a Lottie animation, convert it with our Lottie to TGS tool instead.
