What is a TGS file?

A TGS file is the format Telegram uses for animated stickers. Under the hood it is a Lottie animation (vector JSON) compressed with gzip, which is why a full sticker animation usually weighs less than 64 KB. Telegram renders these vector frames natively, so animated stickers stay crisp at any size.

Because TGS is not a video or image format, most apps and editors cannot open it. Converting a TGS file to GIF makes the animation portable: you can share it in chats that do not support Telegram stickers, embed it in documents and presentations, or publish it on the web. This converter unpacks the gzip layer, renders the Lottie animation frame by frame, and encodes a GIF locally.

How to convert a TGS file to GIF

  1. 01

    Get the .tgs file

Save an animated sticker from Telegram Desktop (right-click → Save As), or export one from your sticker pack. Plain Lottie JSON files work here too.

  2. 02

    Drop it into the converter

The tool detects the gzip header, unpacks the Lottie JSON inside, and shows a live preview with the sticker's dimensions, frame rate, and duration.

  3. 03

    Choose GIF settings

Keep the 512 px sticker size or scale it down, pick a frame rate, and decide between a transparent or solid background.

  4. 04

    Download your GIF

Press convert and download the finished GIF — ready for WhatsApp, Discord, docs, slides, or anywhere GIFs play.

Reads real .tgs files

The converter unpacks the gzip layer of Telegram sticker files and reads the Lottie animation inside.

Sticker spec check

See dimensions, frame rate, and duration, with checks against Telegram's official sticker requirements.

Browser-based and private

Decompression, rendering, and GIF encoding all run locally. Your sticker never leaves the browser.

Tuned for stickers

Defaults match Telegram's 512 px canvas with transparency, so exported GIFs look like the original sticker.

03faq

TGS to GIF — frequently asked questions

How do I save a .tgs file from Telegram?

In Telegram Desktop, open the sticker, right-click it and choose Save As to get the .tgs file. On mobile, forward the sticker to Saved Messages and use Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web to download it.

Why can't other apps open TGS files?

TGS is a Telegram-specific container: a gzip-compressed Lottie JSON animation. Image viewers and video players don't recognize it, which is why converting to GIF is the easiest way to reuse a sticker outside Telegram.

Does the conversion upload my sticker to a server?

No. The gzip decompression, Lottie rendering, and GIF encoding all happen inside your browser using web APIs. Nothing is uploaded, which also makes the tool fast.

Can I keep the transparent background?

Yes. Telegram stickers use transparency, and the converter preserves it by default. GIF transparency is 1-bit (fully transparent or fully opaque), so soft shadows may show hard edges — pick a solid background color if that matters.

What GIF frame rate should I choose?

TGS stickers are authored at 60 fps, but GIFs get large at high frame rates. 30 fps keeps motion smooth at roughly half the size, and 15–24 fps works well for small preview GIFs.

Can I convert a GIF back into a Telegram sticker?

GIF to TGS is not a lossless round trip because TGS is vector-based. If you want stickers for Telegram, use our video sticker tools or create a Lottie animation and export it as .tgs instead.
