How to use this tool

  1. 01

    Open your image

Choose a PNG, JPEG, or WebP up to 20 MB and 32 megapixels. A transparent PNG works well for logos. Animated images become a single still frame.

  2. 02

    Frame and preview

Keep the entire image or crop it to a square. Adjust padding and choose sizes from 16 to 256 pixels. Check small icons at their actual size.

  3. 03

    Download the ICO

Save one ICO containing every selected size. Use it as a website favicon or select it in a compatible Windows icon setting.

One ICO, several resolutions

An ICO is a container for icon images. This converter stores a separate PNG image for each selected resolution, so a compatible browser or Windows application can choose a suitable size. The favicon preset includes 16, 32, and 48 pixels. The Windows preset includes 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixels.

PNG-compressed ICO files suit modern Windows and browsers. Older software that specifically requires bitmap-based ICO files may need another export format.

Keep your image in proportion

Fit keeps the complete picture and adds space around it. Fill crops the edges to fit the square. Neither option stretches a rectangular image. Padding leaves room around the icon, while a solid background fills transparent areas.

Small icons need clear shapes and strong contrast. Fine text and busy photos can disappear at 16 pixels. Start with a square, high-resolution source when possible. Enlarging a small image does not restore missing detail.

Use the file as a favicon

Upload favicon.ico to your website and reference it in your document head with a link element whose rel is icon and href points to the file. Your hosting platform or site builder may have a favicon upload setting instead.

Browsers cache favicons. If the old icon remains, check the file URL and try a fresh browser session. An ICO does not replace platform-specific assets such as an Apple touch icon.

Frequently asked questions

How can I turn a picture into an icon?

Open your image in this converter, choose Fit or Fill, select icon sizes, and download the ICO. Fit preserves the whole picture. The file contains all selected resolutions rather than only a renamed image.

Can I convert a PNG to an icon?

Yes. PNG files can become ICO files, including transparent PNGs. Keep Transparent selected to preserve existing transparency. This tool does not automatically remove a solid background from a picture.

How do I put a photo as an icon?

Convert the photo to ICO first. For a Windows shortcut, open Properties, choose Change Icon in the Shortcut tab, and browse to the ICO. Folder customization is usually under Properties, Customize, Change Icon. The available settings depend on the item and Windows version. Website icons use the site’s favicon setting. macOS custom icons use a different workflow.

Is there a free way to convert files to ICO files?

Yes. This image to ICO converter is free and runs in your browser without an account. It accepts PNG, JPEG, and WebP images, lets you choose multiple sizes, and downloads an ICO without a watermark.
